New Releases: August 2014 – Part One

Yesterday was Release Day and I was so busy posting my review of Kresley Cole’s Dark Skye everywhere (here, our Facebook page, Twitter, Pinterest, Goodreads, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble) that I didn’t get the chance to post the full list of books that came out. Sorry, Peeps!

Obviously I was rather preoccupied by but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that Dark Skye wasn’t the only big release for me yesterday. Lara Adrian’s Crave the Night, the latest installment in the Midnight Breed series, also hit the shelves. Being the dedicated fan-girl that I am, I made sure to make the rounds of my local booksellers to make sure that both titles were not only on the shelves, but faced as well. To be honest, my somewhat hick small town isn’t really very good at keeping up with new releases so I had to ask for the titles in more than one store. I consider it to have been a good day’s work!

Here are the paranormal titles that released yesterday:

Laura Wright News

Author Laura Wright sent out her latest newsletter the other day and I’ve gotta say that she’s one busy lady! First Laura teams up with Alexandra Ivy with two back-to-back Bayou Heat books releasing this spring – Lian/Roch (April), and Hakan/Severin (May).

Shameless is another upcoming paranormal and it will be part of a new series called Masters of Seduction. Other participating authors include Lara Adrian, Donna Grant, and Alexandra Ivy. The boxed collection features Incubus alphas and it will be in stores this summer. * * Click the link below to Pre-order for just 99 cents! Save $4 on the collection when you order now! * *

This will be followed by Eternal Storm, the next Mark of the Vampire book, sometime later this year.

In addition to these paranormals, Laura also has a new Western series, The Cavanaugh Brothers, debuting in June (with the second book releasing in October), another Western titled Sinful in Spurs coming out as part of the Sinful Seconds group series. She is also working on Rebel Ink, the latest installment in her Wicked Ink Chronicles. Whew! That’s a whole lot to cram into one year and knowing Laura, I wouldn’t be the slightest bit surprised to see her add on to this as the year progresses.

Peeps, as you know I try to keep track of all of the paranormal books that come out and I post the New Releases on a fairly regular basis. I rely on Facebook and Twitter for much of this information, as well as various author newsletters, but most of it comes from trolling the Barnes & Noble site and their “Customers Who Bought This Also Bought” feature, as well as their New Releases page. And yes, I do check out Amazon on occasion as well. What this translates into is a phenomenal amount of time spent looking at book covers and researching more books than I’ll ever have the time to read.

Research purposes aside, it is very true that readers have a tendency to judge books by their covers and I myself have picked up more than one book/author just because I loved the cover art. Here is a list of my favourite paranormal covers of 2013.

The covers that I was drawn to at the beginning of the year tend to be a bit stark, with lots of white, black, and red being featured. I don’t know if this is a subconscious reflection of how I tend to feel during the winter months or just where I was emotionally at the time. As the year progressed though I was really drawn to golds, purples, and dark blues. And wings, apparently, but that’s no surprise as I love pretty much all winged creatures (and have the tattoos to prove it).

Over all though, I’d say my Top 3 choices are the covers for J.R. Ward’s Possession (those eyes!),  Kelley Armstrong’s Omens (scenery is a refreshing change from people and we need more green on covers) , and J.R. Ward’s Lover at Last (again, Qhuinn’s eyes!) – and just by coincidence, all three covers happen to be designed by Anthony Ramondo. Fourth place would go to Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Cloak & Silence (it’s stock photography and has been used on more than one cover this year but I love that man).

I wish that I could acknowledge all of the cover artists personally but unfortunately so few of them are publicly credited and I either don’t have the book in question or I simply can’t find their names. If you know the cover artists of the books on his list please share so that I can give them their due credit!

Top 12 Paranormal Books of 2013

Ah, January… The time of year when every blogger reviews their favourite things from the year before…

Not one to buck a sound trend, I sat down this morning and had a look at all of the paranormal books that released in 2013 and made a list of my favourites reads of the past year. One of the things that I realized while doing this review is that while I did manage to add a select few contemporary and historical fiction writers to my reading repertoire (see Book Shelf for names), I only added one new paranormal author – Darynda Jones. Darynda has quickly become one of my favourite authors and I highly encourage my readers to pick up her Charley Davidson series if you haven’t done so already. The main characters of Charley Davidson (grim reaper) and Reyes Farrow (son of Satan) are sexy, funny as hell, and a delightful change from the usual vampires and lycans that seem to dominate the field of paranormal fiction. I read the first five books in the series this past year and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book, Sixth Grave on the Edge, when it releases this May.

So who else did I love in 2013?

Lara Adrian, A Touch of Midnight, Midnight Breed

Savannah Dupree is a freshman studying at Boston University on a full scholarship. But academic excellence is only one of her gifts. Savannah possesses something even more remarkable than her quick mind and insatiable curiosity for learning. With a simple touch, she can see an object’s past—a skill that puts her life in danger, when her studies bring her into contact with a centuries-old English sword and the terrible secret hidden within the blade’s history.

In all his three hundred years of living as one of the Breed, vampire warrior Gideon never dreamed he’d see the blade again that spilled his young brothers’ lives ages ago in London. Ever since the boys’ deaths, Gideon’s been on a personal quest to rid the world of Rogue vampires, but now he can’t help wondering if the brutal slaying was something more sinister—an act perpetrated by an unknown enemy. An enemy who is apparently living in hiding somewhere in Boston. There’s one certain way to prove Gideon’s suspicion, but it will mean using innocent, gifted Savannah to help uncover the full truth—a truth that will shatter everything she knows about herself and the world around her. And with danger closing in from all sides, the passion that ignites between Gideon and Savannah will tempt them to risk their hearts and lives for a love that might just last an eternity….

(This 40,000-word novella, a prequel to the Midnight Breed series, was previously published in its entirety in The Midnight Breed Series Companion, also available now in ebook and paperback.)
