Peeps, as you know I try to keep track of all of the paranormal books that come out and I post the New Releases on a fairly regular basis. I rely on Facebook and Twitter for much of this information, as well as various author newsletters, but most of it comes from trolling the Barnes & Noble site and their “Customers Who Bought This Also Bought” feature, as well as their New Releases page. And yes, I do check out Amazon on occasion as well. What this translates into is a phenomenal amount of time spent looking at book covers and researching more books than I’ll ever have the time to read.

Research purposes aside, it is very true that readers have a tendency to judge books by their covers and I myself have picked up more than one book/author just because I loved the cover art. Here is a list of my favourite paranormal covers of 2013.

The covers that I was drawn to at the beginning of the year tend to be a bit stark, with lots of white, black, and red being featured. I don’t know if this is a subconscious reflection of how I tend to feel during the winter months or just where I was emotionally at the time. As the year progressed though I was really drawn to golds, purples, and dark blues. And wings, apparently, but that’s no surprise as I love pretty much all winged creatures (and have the tattoos to prove it).

Over all though, I’d say my Top 3 choices are the covers for J.R. Ward’s Possession (those eyes!),  Kelley Armstrong’s Omens (scenery is a refreshing change from people and we need more green on covers) , and J.R. Ward’s Lover at Last (again, Qhuinn’s eyes!) – and just by coincidence, all three covers happen to be designed by Anthony Ramondo. Fourth place would go to Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Cloak & Silence (it’s stock photography and has been used on more than one cover this year but I love that man).

I wish that I could acknowledge all of the cover artists personally but unfortunately so few of them are publicly credited and I either don’t have the book in question or I simply can’t find their names. If you know the cover artists of the books on his list please share so that I can give them their due credit!

Top 12 Paranormal Books of 2013

Ah, January… The time of year when every blogger reviews their favourite things from the year before…

Not one to buck a sound trend, I sat down this morning and had a look at all of the paranormal books that released in 2013 and made a list of my favourites reads of the past year. One of the things that I realized while doing this review is that while I did manage to add a select few contemporary and historical fiction writers to my reading repertoire (see Book Shelf for names), I only added one new paranormal author – Darynda Jones. Darynda has quickly become one of my favourite authors and I highly encourage my readers to pick up her Charley Davidson series if you haven’t done so already. The main characters of Charley Davidson (grim reaper) and Reyes Farrow (son of Satan) are sexy, funny as hell, and a delightful change from the usual vampires and lycans that seem to dominate the field of paranormal fiction. I read the first five books in the series this past year and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book, Sixth Grave on the Edge, when it releases this May.

So who else did I love in 2013?

Sherrilyn Kenyon, Time Untime, Dark-Hunters

The Mayans aren’t the only ones with a 2012 prophecy…

Long before recorded history, there was a Keetoowah warrior so feared that everyone trembled before his wrath. Only a brutal betrayal by the one closest to him could defeat him. But not even death was the end of a man so strong.

The Time Untime approaches…

Kateri Avani has been plagued her entire life with dreams she doesn’t understand. Images of places she’s never been and of a man she’s never seen. Her quest for answers has driven her to Las Vegas where she hopes to finally silence the demons in her mind.

What she never anticipates is coming face to face with the warrior who has haunted her her entire life. One who belongs to a world the scientist in her refuses to believe is real.

Ren Waya came back from the dead to keep the prophecy he began from coming true and ending the world. For thousands of years, he has fought the same evil that once possessed him. But now that evil has found the one person he can’t fight. The one person who, against his will, holds the most sacred part of him.

His heart.

But if he doesn’t kill Kateri, the deadliest of evils will reemerge and destroy everyone else on the planet. It was a sacrifice he made once.

Will he be able to make it again?

SLK Dishes on the Lords of Avalon and Redemption

Sherrilyn Kenyon was interviewed by Romantic Times Web Editor Morgan Doremus at the 2010 New York Comic Con last weekend and she talked about the inspiration behind her Lords of Avalon series, the new Belador series and her upcoming projects for 2011, including Redemption, the 20th book in her Dark-Hunter series.

Literary Characters for Halloween?

I was visiting over at Book of Secrets the other day, where Diana is hosting a Halloween contest in which she talks about dressing up for Halloween.  She mentioned that while she will probably dress up as a witch this year, she’d really rather dress up as Hester Prynne from The Scarlet Letter and I thought “That’s brilliant!”  I’ve never considered dressing up as Hester Prynne before but now I really want to do that too.

Over the years I’ve dressed as my fair share of generic vampires, witches, and fairies but not too many actual literary characters.  I’ve been the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz but no one seemed to realize that I was that scarecrow.  I also dressed as Pippi Longstocking one year and that went over much better.  Of course I was still a child when I tried out those personas.  Last October at K-Con I dressed head to toe in black leather (biker pants, boots, vest) and went to the Dark-Hunter ball as Psyche but once again no one seemed to realize that I was portraying an actual character (mind you, when you’re in a ballroom full of people wearing predominately black clothing it’s a little difficult to stand out).   Hester Prynne would definitely be a character who would stand out, at least among people who’ve read the classics.

How about you?  Have you ever dressed up as a literary character for Halloween, costume party or convention?  Who did you dress as?  If you haven’t dressed as a literary character before, who would you like to dress as?  Send your photos to if you have ‘em (literary characters only) and I’ll post them online.  I’ll even run a little contest if I receive enough photos to make it worth while.  Be sure to tell me which character you are portraying and which book or series your character can be found in.

Evyl Ed’s DragonCon Recap

Although I wasn’t fortunate enough to attend DragonCon in person this year many of my friends did, including the always entertaining Evyl Eddie Coulter and fellow Menyon BFF Teri Hamilton Garrett.  Ed has indulged me with another one of his convention recaps and some photos and Teri provided several photos for Paranormal Bites readers to enjoy as well.  Thanks guys!  You rock, as usual!

Another DragonCon has come and gone. As usual it feels like it was over way too soon.  I swear it feels like it’s over quicker and quicker every year.  Here’s some brief coverage of my DragonCon 2010 experience.

My friend Leslie and I arrived Thursday afternoon at the Hyatt. Once we got checked into the hotel we headed to the exhibit hall in the Marriott to meet up with Sherrilyn Kenyon and the rest of the gang to setup the booth.  It took no time at all to get the booth up and running.  As we were setting up we began to hear about the evil of the registration line.  The line was so huge that people were waiting up to 2 to 4 hours in line and when it finally closed for the night at 11PM there was still a line of people around the building.  After grabbing dinner the rest of the evening was spent unpacking and reviewing schedules to follow. Afterwards I met up with the always awesome Alethea Kontis and her boyfriend Joe and headed to the green room for drinks then it was off to bed to rest up for the next day. Continue Reading…
