Here are a few new books/series to look forward to in 2011…
Red Riding Hood by Sarah Blakley-Cartwright:
The residents of the sleepy village of Daggorhorn have long kept the local werewolf at bay with a monthly sacrifice. But now the Wolf has told Valerie—the only villager who can hear his voice—that she must surrender herself to him or everyone she loves will die.
In Red Riding Hood, a novel that 22-year-old Sarah Blakley-Cartwright has written based on a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson, the plot of the traditional fairy tale has thickened substantially. On sale January 25, this Little, Brown/Poppy book ties into the Warner Brothers film that is set for March release. Directed by Catherine Hardwicke of Twilight fame (who contributes an introduction to the novel), the movie stars Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman, and Julie Christie.
Rather than strictly adapting Johnson’s screenplay, Blakley-Cartwright sought to flesh out the characters in her novel. “I hope I was able to add to the story,” she reflects. “The first quarter or so of my novel is not in the movie, in fact. At the start of the film, a character dies, and Catherine thought it was important to give readers a sense of who she is. This isn’t just a fairy tale, but a coming-of-age story that is a parable about power and abuse of it. It was very important to me that I capture the political dimension of the script as well as the social dynamics it established.”
Red Riding Hood, which has a 100,000-copy first printing and has been sold to publishers in 13 territories, will be published simultaneously in trade paperback and as an enhanced e-book. Components of the latter include a video discussion among Hardwicke, Johnson, and Blakley-Cartwright; an audio of Hardwicke reading her introduction; blueprints and photos of the set; sketches of the costume designs; and storyboards from the film.
Readers will also have access to what Stein calls “an extra bonus”: a final chapter to Red Riding Hood that will be available free online (at www.redridinghoodbook.com) after the film’s release. “The story is a whodunit, with lots of wonderful red herrings, and with every chapter readers are led to think someone else is the werewolf,” she says. “The novel has a great ending as it is, but there’s an extra surprise in the online bonus chapter.” (All content by Sally Lodge, Publishers Weekly.)
Passion by Lauren Kate:
“When I started writing Passion, I knew the series was bursting into some very exciting uncharted territory. This chase backwards through time, with each chapter set in a different country and a different century across five thousand years is undoubtedly the most romantic, most intense, most…passionate book I’ve ever written–and I think you’ll agree it has the cover to match. I love the dramatic bursts of color, the intensity and desolation of the backdrop, and of course, the dress. It’s also the perfect book to show just a hint of Luce’s face.” ~ Lauren Kate. On bookshelves June 14th.
Witches of East End by Melissa de la Cruz:
After tackling vampires and hell hounds, Melissa de la Cruz is ready to get witchy. The author of the popular YA series Blue Bloods is releasing the first book in a new series, this time for adults, called Witches of East End. Centering around the magically inclined Beauchamp family, the series will take place in the same universe as de la Cruz’s previous books, and readers can expect some of her bloodsucking characters to make an appearance. “It’ll be more than a cameo,” de la Cruz told EW. “They are a little more integral to the plot than just coming by and saying, ‘Hi!’ They actually become suspects in the book’s mystery.” Witches of East End hits stores June 21st. I wanted to give my readers an example of why I think that it is ridiculous for teen literature to fall under the children’s literature publishing umbrella (see previous post). The following is the “Bestsellers Children’s Fiction” list for October 11th 2010:
1. Torment – Lauren Kate; Age Range – YA; Topic – fallen angels, demons, reincarnation and deception; “equal parts romance and thriller”
2. The Red Pyramid – Rick Riordan; Age Range – 9 to 11; Topic – estranged siblings struggling to cope with their mother’s death battle ancient Egyptian gods after their father accidentally awakens them
3. Clockwork Angel – Cassandra Clare; Age Range – YA; Topic – a teen girl finds love amongst vampires, demons, shape shifters and more but is torn between saving her brother and saving the world
4. Fallout – Ellen Hopkins; Age Range – YA; Topic – teen siblings trying to survive abuse found in foster homes, a drug addict mother, rapist father, and their own addictions
5. The Book Thief – Markus Zusak; Age Range – YA; Topic – a young girl learns how to read and hone her book thieving skills during the holocaust
6. The Adventures of Ook and Gluk, Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future – Dav Pilkey; Age Range – 7 to 10; Topic – the adventures of two young cave boys
7. Dork Diaries: Tales from a Not So Popular Party Girl – Rachel Renee Russell; Age Range – 12 and up; Topic – middle grade romance and rivalry
8. Radiance – Alyson Noël; Age Range – Conflicting – Listed both as YA and as 9 to 12; Topic – deceased middle grader becomes a Soul Catcher tasked with helping other souls to move on
9. Reckless – Cornelia Funke; Age Range – YA; Topic – dark magic; “few child characters, and veiled sexual innuendo and violence make this edgier fare”, “blood and violence, betrayal”
10. Linger – Maggie Stiefvater; Age Range – YA; Topic – the relationships of two young human women and the male werewolves that they love; “spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love – the light and the dark”
11. Fallen – Lauren Kate; Age Range – YA; Topic – unrequited love at reform school; “dangerously exciting and darkly romantic … the ultimate love story”
12. Monster High – Lisi Harrison; Age Range – YA; Topic – “a fresh twist on high school, romance, and the horrors of trying to fit in”
13. Halo – Alexandra Adornetto; Age Range – YA; Topic – a 17 year old angel falls for a mortal boy
14. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian – Sherman Alexie; Age Range – YA; Topic – “the struggle to survive between the grinding plates of the Indian and white worlds”
15. Shiver – Maggie Stiefvater; Age Range – YA; Topic – “a lyrical tale of alienated werewolves and first love”
The above information is from Publishers Weekly and BarnesandNoble.com. Of the 15 books on this list only 3 are clearly written for children, while a 4th book is under contention. That means that the remaining 11 or 12 books are not intended for children at all but are written for a teen audience.
There are several paranormal related books on this list, which I am fine with (obviously considering the overriding topic of this blog), but in my opinion as a parent and former elementary school teacher, the romantic relationships, substance abuse, sexual innuendo, and violence that occur in the majority of books on this list (and in a great number of other YA titles) does not belong in the children’s publishing category or in the same immediate retail space. Certainly as a retailer I would distinguish YA literature from children’s literature and merchandise and market them as separate entities.

“Three of these things belong together
Three of these things are kind of the same
Can you guess which one of these doesn’t belong here?
Now it’s time to play our game (time to play our game).”
