It’s a very quiet Release Day for paranormal fiction but that is alright as it allows me to focus on the release of Visions, the second book in Kelley Armstrong’s Cainsville series, without feeling guilty for ignoring several other deserving books in the process. Kelley is not only one of my favourite authors, but she also has the distinction of being one of my favourite Canadian authors as well, and that list is considerably smaller. In a field that seems to be largely dominated by American authors it thrills me that Kelley more than holds her own. For those of you who may not be familiar with her as of yet, she is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Otherworld series – a series that just happened to get it’s own cable television program, BITTEN, this past winterl, as well as the hugely popular Darkest Powers and Darkness Rising young adult trilogies, and the Nadia Stafford series. Starting to sound familiar?
As much as I love the Otherworld series – finally, a female werewolf! – I believe that the Cainsville series is surpassing it in my esteem. When I put the book down after reading the last page I found myself actually saying out loud, to an empty room, “Man, that was good!”, and I immediately wanted to find someone to discuss the book with. What is it about Cainsville that I love so much? Well, it’s best explained by having a quick read of my review for Omens, the first book in the series, followed by my review for Visions.

For those of us who have been following Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series since the first book Saturday is set to be a banner day as the small screen adaptation finally airs on Starz network in the US. We Canadians have to wait until Sunday, August 24th for the show to air on Showcase. A special torture that will have more than a few of us contemplating a mass border-crossing, I’m sure.
For those of us who suffer from an especially acute case of Outlanderitis the good folks at VisitScotland.com have put together a list of must-visit places that will allow us to follow in Claire’s footsteps as she first falls for her highland laird. Suggestions include:
- Roam the streets of Inverness in the Highlands where Claire and Frank went for their second honeymoon and find your own cosy Mrs Baird’s Bed and Breakfast to stay in.
- Venture off beyond the city walls in search of the mysterious Craigh na Dun, a split stone of the stone circle that sent Claire back to Jacobite times. Although fictional, this could have been inspired by the Clava Cairns, one of Scotland’s most evocative sites dating back to Bronze Age, with remnants of stone circles surrounding the sacred burial grounds.
- While in the area, explore the magnificent ruins of Urquhart Castle where the characters picnicked, cruise the calm waters of Loch Ness and see for yourself if you can spot the legendary Loch Ness Monster.
- Culloden Battlefield is where Claire and Jamie said their goodbyes before the disastrous Battle of Culloden. Visit the site and pay respect to those who lost their lives in the last battle ever fought on British soil.
- Don’t miss one of the most romantic and unspoilt castles in Scotland, Castle Leod near the Victorian town of Strathpeffer. Lived in by the Mackenzie clan for well over 500 years, could this be the inspiration behind Castle Leoch, the seat of Colum and Dougal Mackenzie in the books?
- Or how about extending your stay in the area and taking in the village of Beauly which is strongly associated with Clan Fraser of Lovat from whom Jamie descends? Explore the tranquil ruins of Beauly Priory where Claire met Maisri the seer.
Read the rest of the list here.
I don’t know about you but THIS is definitely on my Bucket List!

Yesterday was Release Day and I was so busy posting my review of Kresley Cole’s Dark Skye everywhere (here, our Facebook page, Twitter, Pinterest, Goodreads, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble) that I didn’t get the chance to post the full list of books that came out. Sorry, Peeps!
Obviously I was rather preoccupied by but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that Dark Skye wasn’t the only big release for me yesterday. Lara Adrian’s Crave the Night, the latest installment in the Midnight Breed series, also hit the shelves. Being the dedicated fan-girl that I am, I made sure to make the rounds of my local booksellers to make sure that both titles were not only on the shelves, but faced as well. To be honest, my somewhat hick small town isn’t really very good at keeping up with new releases so I had to ask for the titles in more than one store. I consider it to have been a good day’s work!
Here are the paranormal titles that released yesterday:
Linda O. Johnston, Loyal Wolf, Alpha Force, eBook, August 1, 2014
Rhyannon Byrd, Dark Wolf Returning, eBook, August 1, 2014
Lara Adrian, Crave the Night, Midnight Breed Book 12, Hardcover, August 5, 2014
Chloe Neill, Blood Games, Chicagoland Vampires Book 10, Paperback, August 5, 2014
Hannah Jayne, Under the Final Moon, Underworld Detection Agency Book 6, Paperback, August 5, 2014
Kat Richardson, Revenant, Greywalker Book 9, Hardcover, August 5, 2014
Kresley Cole, Dark Skye, Immortals After Dark Book 15, Hardcover, August 5, 2014
Rob Thurman, Downfall, Cal Leandros Book 9, Paperback, August 5, 2014

It’s Tuesday, and book lovers everywhere know what that means – It’s Release Day! I’ll be posting a list of this weeks new releases shortly but first I wanted to take a moment to say “Happy Release Day!” to one of my very favourite authors, Kresley Cole.
Kresley’s Dark Skye hits bookstore shelves today and it’s the 15th book in her phenomenal Immortals After Dark series. It also marks the fourth book from this series that I have had the pleasure of reviewing. You can read my reviews of the following series titles by clicking on the links below:
Dark Needs at Night’s Edge
Demon From the Dark
I’ve been reading Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series for a few years now and this is the fourth book in the series that I have reviewed for Paranormal Bites. (I’ve also reviewed the first two books in her Arcana Chronicles series as well.) Why do I keep focusing so much on one author when the paranormal romance/urban fantasy/mystery genres are so rich with authors to choose from? That’s easy – Kresley Cole’s writing is just that good. Period.
The cast of characters in the IAD series is huge and it grows with each book (Dark Skye is the 15th, incidentally). All of the story lines merge and intertwine as the various character connections are revealed throughout the series. In fact multiple story lines occur simultaneously, allowing readers to encounter the individual books out of order without being completely lost, and I find this to be a rather rare occurrence. I’ve encountered far too many series in the past with story lines that are so linear that they must be read in order or the reader is lost, thus compromising reader enjoyment should they happen to pick up a mid-series book first.
Cole weaves her story lines so masterfully that I often imagine her as a giant spider spinning her opus web or as one of the mythological Fates themselves, creating diverse species and situations, and establishing rules just to bend or break them as she sees fit… If fact, if I had to chose one of her own IAD characters to identify Cole with, I’d have to say that judging by her writing, she reminds me a great deal of Nix, the supposedly crazy, “ever knowing” Valkyrie with the maddening habit of popping up unexpectedly, in the least likely places and circumstances, and stirring things up to the distress of her fellow Lorens. Nix is one of the most enduring characters of the series, by the way. I love her kind of Crazy!

Apparently J.R. Ward shared the cover for her upcoming Black Dagger Brotherhood novel, The Shadows, on the weekend but I just found it today. In case you missed it as well, here it is:
The Warden listed the release date as April 20th, 2015 but Amazon has it listed as April 7th (and yes, it is available for pre-order from Amazon). Regardless of the exact day, my birthday is in April so I know what my “To Laurie, Love Laurie” gift is going to be, lol.
